  You start to wonder how it is possible to completely derail something that „easy“ as a „zombie film with a feminist angle“.
  Well, if nothing else this proofs that nothing is easy. A coherent story, an understandable cinematic space, sympathetic characters, a general understanding why who is doing what - better take nothing of that for granted, but work for it. Work for it as hard as you can. And if you are lucky, your zombie film with a feminist…

  The Naked Island 1960

  It was everything I hoped it would be: quiet, beautiful, calm and simple, with one foot in artschool and the other one on dirty ground. After Onibaba and Kuroneko this is the third film by Kaneto Shindô I watched. While the other two are right up my alley with their soft touches of horror, this one really is a minimalist masterpiece – I can say: I WAS on the naked island. (Then again I was quite dozy...) A great late summer flick.
