There was a lot to like about this movie but I felt myself wanting more from it. My initial thoughts are that there’s a really great concept here buried under a pile of tired sci-fi tropes. Also I’m sorry but there’s just nothing I hate more than a ham-fisted “Trump bad” nod in movies these days, sue me.

Babygirl 2024
I enjoyed this movie. Great performances and beautiful, intentional cinematography complimented by a very decent soundtrack. I think my main issue is just how much it borrows from The Piano Teacher (which I also really like), but to that end I’d still say that the subject matter is given a fresh perspective, and it’s evident that the filmmakers care about it more as a political issue. And to THAT end I’d also credit it with tempering heavy handed political themes…

For me, this was a bit of a slog that even the excitement of being able to catch it at Cannes couldn’t make easier to get through. I’d argue that Wes Anderson has reached critical mass in terms of his styling, to the point where this movie felt like more of a parody than anything else.
