This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Definitely should not have been marketed as a horror film, I see why people were disappointed if they were expecting a more traditional "supernatural haunted house" story.
That being said, I avoided pretty much all the marketing before watching and enjoyed it overall.
Loved it from a technical standpoint – every(?) scene was done in a single take, I think from a drone that was operated by Soderbergh. All filmed from inside the house (except the final shot). The Poltergeist-y…
bloopers were great, George the cab-driver was the highlight
did they really need to have Hiroyuki Sanada crash through the roof of that little booth? It was funny, though
did not know Roman Polanski was in this 😬
Robert Pattinson continues to impress — he is so fucking good in this.
Supporting cast are great as well, specifically Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni Collette.
Dialogue is a little funky, I can’t quite put my finger on it.
Political commentary is a little (a lot) on the nose. I also wish some of the ethical and moral implications of the human printing process were explored more, but I get that that’s not the main objective of the narrative.
Fun movie, though!
The yearning and envy that Eisenberg’s character feels in the film is something I connect with on a personal level. The “wanting to help but not quite knowing how to do it in the best way because of my own insecurities and yet still trying my best to put myself out there but still being rejected” is something that resonated with me and something I struggle with in my own relationships. I hope I — and Benji and David — can work through these internal struggles and emerge victorious one day.
Not much to say, I love watching these types of simple, personal flicks.
