A powerful anti-war film, one of the best I’ve seen. It operates on an entirely different level than Full Metal Jacket, though both share a similar message. The opening sequence brilliantly captures the boredom, and perhaps the naivety, of the soldiers’ experience. They’re eager to return home as heroes, but how can you be a hero if you haven’t even fired a shot? Hungry for action, they end up putting themselves into a completely unnecessary catastrophe.
One scene in particular…
Nothing new or surprising in the story, but sometimes it’s nice to bury yourself under the depressing dirt and rot of the past delivered in strong cinematography and art direction, just to put your own sores into perspective and maybe even forget them for a moment.
This movie has got it all.
It’s a movie about dreams, in the literal sense but also dreams of hoping, dreaming for a better or different life. Lynch shows us the dreams of an actress, in a literal dreamworld. Within this love story he manages to also give critique on the Hollywood culture in a way that is self reflective and not pushed down your throat. He gives this critique by adjusting not only the story but even the cinematography. …
Very genuine, beautiful acting. “I like this tree the most because it tipped over and it’s still growing.” I think it’s beautiful too when people are at the edge of existence and keep on going.
