An emotionally charged war piece, that in lieu of pure combat and horrific imagery it chooses to depict the enduring toll it has on our minds.
Tarkovsky captures this through a grief-stricken 12 year-old scout. His final fleeting moments of innocence are depicted through dream, only to be crushed by his pain and anguish. Overcome with this, he becomes hostile and seeks vengeance. Ivan has lost his innocence and childhood.
While short, every shot is crafted to show Ivan's inner turmoil in stark imagery. Many moments here linger in my mind like a haunting dream. Quite a debut from Tarkovsky.

This won my heart as soon as I heard Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Their music lends itself so well to film. Although I'm happy they havent allowed their music to be used on other films.
