Watched the brutally long director’s cut. Absolutely worth it. I admired the contrast of these grandiose battle scenes, with thousands of extras in some instances, to the minimal set design of some scenes. The film is clunky, and square at times. Deliberate too. But that also seems to wain between these highlights of conquest.
The pinnacle of antiheroism. A phenomenal “fuck you” to asymmetrical law and order.
“I’ll see you in hell, William Munny.”
…
“..Yeah.”
A captivating chaos from front to back. The naturally-lit scenes and long cuts easily wrap you in the exciting, distracting, overwhelming, and occasionally hollow feeling that aligns in real life. So little of the sharp dialog seems like it was written, rather razor blades dealt out with lightning speed. The characters are quick, fueled by a large cup of motive with a shot of anxiety; pushing against each other’s words as well as their bodies. This was the most captivating watch I’ve seen in years.
