Was not prepared for this film’s subtlety and generosity. My god. Such a rich balance of tones — genuinely funny, sincere, slapstick, then earns tearing your fucking heart out. In awe of Madison.

Careful and precarious. Well-rooted in everyday anxieties — money, family, violence — but blooms unexpectedly into Lynchian sublimity. Extremely claustrophobic: Germany’s flat landscape never goes anywhere but in circles, the leads are left to con and skim points from deals with multinationals that are shuttering all around them, and the dead (?!) show up to stalk and beat the shit out of you! True Great Recession vibes.

I fucking love this. Inventive, bitter, genuinely funny, clear eyed. Gets media saturation so right, the noise of contemporary life, a background hum. Everyone overworked and underpaid. The camera itself austere but full of empathy. Rare that a film of its time gets its time so accurately. Somehow the found footage looks more contemporary. The lead is fucking magnetic. Makes me nostalgic for driving manual. Can’t say it needed to be 3hrs tho.

Fav exchange, over Kenneth Goldsmiths Capital:
“Our clients, they freeze, they think it’s Karl Marx. It’s just a book about New York.”
“Funny. It looks like a gold bar.”

This movie is remedial lol, truly a crime against cinema. A sandcastle Corbet kicks over, having nothing to say about endlessly rich subject matter. He doesn’t even have an eye!
