Faces 1968
I feel like evaluating the “goodness” of some movies is like trying to use a ruler to tell the temperature - it’s a baseline misunderstanding of what your subject is (and in the process, makes you look like a moron). This is particularly salient to me in Cassavetes’ work.
If Cassavetes wanted to make movies that were universally liked, he would and could have. But instead, he created an actors’ medium in what could be described as a world cup…

Mickey 17 2025
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Mickey 17 is by no means the Palm d'Or level work of its older brother; but it’s enjoyable nonetheless, and worth watching on the big screen. Anora 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
It always annoyed me when scripts wouldn’t accurately depict foreigners trying to speak english (miraculously perfect sentence structure etc). Anora fuckin’ nailed this. The performances were some of the best I’ve seen this decade: I felt like I’ve met and known these characters in my own life. There’s a fine line between realistically funny & caricature, and the actors surfed that line perfectly; flirting but never crossing into caricature territory. Sean Baker’s long takes and refusal of easy cuts gave the…

Ikiru 1952
Classics like these make me feel connected to history like I’ve never been before - in a curious, wonderful way - but also in a depressing, helpless way. 75 years later, humanity continues to be haunted by the pettiness and self concern that Ikiru begs us to shake - but in a brand new flavor: the new job, a new follower, a polished identity. At some point…regardless of the century, culture, setting…you need to get off your ass and build your fucking park.
