visually stunning. did a good job at conveying its one message: “war is bad.” was very confused the whole time why the soldiers were letting these photographers run around with them. shoutout jcpenney cameo.
(more thoughts: being anti-war and being apolitical are not always the same thing but here it feels like it. we aren’t ever told which fighters are on which side until the very end, sending a very “both sides are equally, blindly violent” with only vague illusions…

10/10. rivals bend it like beckham for the best of the immigrant sports movie genre. only reason bend it like beckham is at the top is the “lesbian? i thought she was a pisces” line. it does beat out bend it like beckham with its accurate punjabi family first/second gen immigrant tensions. a tribute to southhall really.
still, this movie should be a period piece for 90s/early 2000s punjabi fashion. the mid calf-length circle skirt frock + the satin pyjami bunched up at the ankles? historic.

cried so much it gave me a headache and yet this movie doesn’t even scratch the surface of what was done to sikhs in 1984.
there were a lot of things i didn’t like about this film. for one, the romance subplot was entirely unnecessary and i think it really took away from the seriousness of the film. also, can we please let punjabi characters speak punjabi in movies for once.
