The Brutalist 2024
Beautifully crafted, yet wallowing in its own tragedy. The toxic masculinity and Americanness nearly did me in, though presumably that’s the point; in the wake of Nazism is the American Dream even desirable? And are the alternatives not equally troubled?
As overt as the film’s villainous themes and characters, yet somehow even more ham-fisted, are the metaphors of the selfless wife relegated to a wheelchair, and the rich patron literally r**ing the tortured artist.

Geographies of Solitude 2022
Not as slow as I expected, which makes it more accessible than I expected. Its foundation, however, owes a lot to 1) art school, and 2) mid-20th century documentary. I thought the film might look even grittier, but thanks, I suspect, to lower ASA film stocks – Kodak 7203 50D? – as well as a camera with stable registration, the aesthetic strikes a balance of feeling out-of-time without feeling amateur, and seriously, it's a bit of trope, but thank god…

Rivers and Tides 2001
An easy and pleasant watch, although it didn’t answer most of my questions about Andy Goldsworthy, but that said, it certainly wasn’t trying to. Instead, we get a glimpse into his physical process of sculpting (and stacking, and licking, and smashing, and tossing, and arranging) without actually removing the veil.
