  The American Friend 1977

  I was excited to see this because I liked Wim Wender’s Alice in the Cities, but was sorely disappointed. Neither thrilling nor mysterious, this film is just plain confusing. I watched it with a near permanently furrowed brow because absolutely nothing anyone does in this film makes any sense. The problem is not the acting. In fact, I enjoyed Dennis Hopper’s low-key queerness as Tom Ripley. The problem is the steaming hot mess of a narrative that renders the plot practically impenetrable. Garbage.

  I did not expect to be hysterically laughing throughout a Kurosawa film but that's what happened. I had an hour to kill and I saw this short film listed on the Criterion Collection app and so I gave it whirl not knowing what to expect. And what a surprisingly delightful hour I found myself treated! Ken'ichi Enomoto as the Porter gives one of the most masterful comedic performances ever recored on film.
