Pure cinema. Gorgeously shot and meticulously designed. Ryan O’Neal’s miscasting transmuted to a strength as it underlines our sense of watching an impostor. Kubrick at his most effervescent. Enjoy.
Poor Things stitches the fine face of Frankenstein onto the wooden body of Pinocchio with the brains of Buddhism stuffed in… somewhere, swapping enlightenment out for fourth wave feminism. The visual decor is a pleasing cross-pollination of Victorian whimsy and German Expressionism with nods to Rembrandt and Manet, but despite the adult appearance, a fairy tale this remains. You might even say the movie has the mind of a child…
Having rewatched this for the first time in years, it doesn’t pack quite the same punch as it first did, but Joaquin Phoenix gives a great performance. It might make a good double feature with Beau Is Afraid as both films are in conversation with Jewish identity.
Better than expected. TV movie budget but creative staging and scenic design saves the show. OTT in the best way. The cast all bring it with perhaps one exception in the battered woman character, but willing to blame the writing. A serviceable score with lots of ace dancing. A campy good time. Neve Campbell has a dance number!
