Take a dose of rock and roll, a splash of comic book action, and a healthy bit of humor and you’ve got a recipe for the best movie of the Thor trilogy. To this point, the series had lagged behind both Iron Man and Captain America in quality but a fair amount of ground was made up here. It seemed the director and cast alike finally decided what they wanted the franchise to be and embraced it. The result was a slick, fast paced romp that stands out as Hemsworth and Hiddleston’s best effort in the MCU by a mile.
Methodical sci-fi thriller that deviates wildly from the book. That isn’t a criticism, just statement of fact. As a sophomore effort following Ex Machina, the film succeeds as a beautifully shot, well acted effort. The pace will turn some away, and doesn’t build tension as well as the director likely hoped. There are some tense and unsettling moments sprinkled throughout, though. The ending was somewhat predictable but executed well enough that predictability can be overlooked. Sci-fi purists should enjoy this more than the average moviegoer, but it’s not an unpleasant viewing by any stretch.
