This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Managing to avoid spoilers and basically any critical dialogue about this film, I only expected a visually interesting high-concept thriller. I did not expect it to be such a heartfelt and emotionally provoking family drama. The gorgeous visuals, impressive action choreography, solid comedy, and satisfying attention to minor details are all worth gushing over. But the whole thing is built on such a strong, marvellously delivered emotional core which overshadows the rest of these achievements. Best film I've seen in a long while.
A lot of good ideas and beautiful presentation, but I'm left a little confused by the unfocused storytelling. Perhaps it's because I haven't seen prior Candyman films but the mechanics of the villain and his involvement with Yahya Abdul-Mateen's character aren't entirely clear to me, though the themes on his origin and purpose are very relevant and engaging.
Some cool scenes, some downright silly gore effects, good ideas, iffy execution on the storytelling
Slightly older than I am but aging immeasurably better. Bob Hoskins plays the perfect straight man in an aggressively zany world. Jokes still land, pace never drags for a second, animation blends wonderfully with live action, and, crucially, the film at all times invites you to have as much fun as it is having.
This man makes mime very very funny but please everybody else don't try it.
Also there are scenes where you just gotta respect the sheer physical work (read: worryingly copious saliva) involved in the delivery of some parts.
