Black Orpheus 1959
Truly a beautiful movie. I know it has received a lot of criticism for its simplistic portrayal of Brazil, but I think that can be attributed to the fantastical nature of the film. It’s bright and dreamy, but also cold and haunting. Orpheus’s story is timeless, and the chaos of Carnival is an inspired setting for the tale. Despite its age, Black Orpheus really holds up.

There Will Be Blood is raw and bloody depiction of a man who is consumed by his greed, and his lifelong battle with a pastor who is determined to set him straight. There are likely many interpretations of this film, but one stands out in my mind.
