Michael Mann throws morals aside so easily and gives it matter of fact. Collateral has little fluff outside of a fun twist or two, instead relying on cold violence and desperation to move the story along. As long as it is the script is extremely tight, there's just a lot to get done. The sheer brutality of Cruise's 'Vincent' works really well to snap Foxx's 'Max' into place. It's a solid cross between the glitzy action sequences of Miami Vice

    Shōgun

In a world where a rigorous social structure full of codes dictates life and death- and no one can escape their past- carving out one’s destiny is the ultimate balancing act. Shõgun announces itself in all facets as the latest historical epic on par with HBO’s most prized fare, a unicorn project among a modern landscape of series where patience and attention-to-detail aren’t such a priority. The setting and world building are of marvelous quality as the audience can enjoy…

    The Sting

    ★★★★½

It’s so everything it tries to be. The Sting writes and twists itself in loops around your brain as Redford and Newman seem to wink at the audience over and over. It’s confusing, charming, funny, conniving, and meticulously vengeful. The writing is SO good. Not everything needs to be explained or even thought out too much, you’re just expected to go with the flow and it’s not too hard to follow these characters around without question. Gotta be one of the penultimate Chicago movies too.

    Joy

    ★★★

Joy is good. It captures some of the magic of, but also the very worst tendencies of Silver Linings Playbook. Parts of it feel like the excitement of a Scorsese rags-to-riches narrative and other parts seem they like go on forever. Jennifer Lawrence does almost all of the work and that’s why this is of note! She really was in a great groove

Fuqua confuses me, I compare everything of his to Training Day and therefore everything else is a disappointment. This one feels different than the others though somehow. The voice acting seemed way overdone, despite the excellent names in the cast, and (correct me if I’m wrong, but....) it seems like that might be the one thing you should get right in a movie that’s almost entirely voice acting. Gyllenhaal played a typical character you’d expect from him, and of course…

When Nicole Kidman says “sound that I can feel” in the AMC ad I totally know what she means now
