the movie is a metaphor for how media takes advantage of human psychology and sensationalizes news and headlines to maximize views and virality, even if it could be misleading or self serving. it's a dark and bleak depiction of media we have today honestly.
Jake Gyllenhaal's performance here is so creepy and unnerving at times but that's how you know he's a great actor!
not usually one to enjoy gun/violent movies, but this one was incredible. the storyline combined with Jake Gyllenhaal's acting got me shedding tears. the gunfight showdown scenes are crazy and got me on the edge of my seat.
while the specifics in the movie aren't based on a true story, the story is inspired by real stories between US soldiers in Afghanistan and the locals who worked with the US as interpreters.
powerful quotes:
"there is a hook in me. one that you cannot see. but it is there."
"you are out of your bounds, Ahmed. you are here to translate."
"actually, I'm here to interpret."

A story about a friendship and finding acceptance within yourself and with people who love you for who you are. Two sea monsters, Luca and Alberto, struggle in a world that rejects them for something they can't control, and are othered and outcast, forced to hide their true selves to try and fit in. The film shows us the power of standing up against the "evil empire of injustice" built by the prejudiced, and finding community - for Luca, a deep friendship with Giulia, and for Alberto, a father figure that he has been missing since his abandonment.
