  It certainly looked very pretty in places and I loved how the approach to the castle was very nearly black and white. Unfortunately, most of the characters were quite dull and I didn't really care. Bonus star for Willem Defoe who did his best to lift it.

  Would this massively self-indulgent film have been good without the monkey? Absolutely not. Was it good with the monkey? Yeah, it really was. The special effect work was incredible and didn't throw me at all throughout the whole film. The monkey (I guess actually an ape, right?), itself, made sense to me as the narrator's self image.
