I thought the boilerplate description had a lot of potential but the actual film felt more shallow than I expected, leaning into two dimensional sci-fi tropes and caricatures. I had some nice laughs, the performances were fun, and ultimately everything was tied up in a pretty bow by the end. Not totally sure what was being said beyond the usual critiques of powerful wealth criminals and colonization. I maybe just had higher expectations for Bong Joon-ho!

Rewatched this in its entirety for the first time in years, and there are a lot of moments that are sticking with me, but I’m truly just so devastated by and can’t stop thinking about s2 ep7. When the waiter says “i’m so sorry” to Cooper and no one knows what has just happened but you feel this sadness and loss wash over everyone at the roadhouse… my heart ACHES.

me thinks we did not need a detective for this mystery! this movie was saying a whole lot of nothing and the ending was very expected. maybe would’ve been more fun if it just went balls to the wall with weird lore reveals a la hereditary. two stars for the vibes and sound design for nic cage’s sing screaming.
