The Conversation 1974
A cerebral masterpiece.
None patronising in the most extreme sense of the word. This film leaves you to fill in every paranoid thought. This type of art takes absolute masters in every single discipline, from writer/director to actor to editor, music, cinematography everything is on point.
Great to see Gene Hackman reprise his role in Enemy of the State too. “But he had a different name!” of course he did, the man’s a saxophone playing sleuth.

‘The basis of all true cosmic horror is the violation of the order of nature’
It’s always nice when you feel like a film is directed at you. If you’re a Lovecraft fan then you will sit firmly in the intended cult/camp for this film, but there’s much more to The Endless than ‘Non-Euclidean geometry.’ there’s some excellent performances Here, underpinned by a great script that manages to be funny whilst generating real empathy for the characters. Make something beautiful and then work together with someone you deeply care about to destroy it.
If this film shows anything, it’s that you don’t need a complex narrative to hold an audience. You just need to show the truth. Beautiful vibrant landscapes with flashes of unnatural colour to remind you that we truly are strange flowers poking out of this arid landscape.
