A Real Pain 2024
In a lot of ways, A Real Pain is a perfectly realized 90-minute film. It explores a lot of big ideas--grief, love, family, and isolation--gracefully without positioning itself as a definitive take on any of them. Instead, It offers a few thought-provoking ideas through an expertly crafted slice of two cousins' life. What's most intriguing to me is the film's almost complete physical setting in liminal spaces. We're all just passing through.

The Brutalist 2024
The first half works so well! Reminiscent of Beau Travail, it follows the doomed story of two men dancing around their egos and each other and the repercussions for their families and friends. Corbet asks questions about nothing smaller than capitalism, war, violence, art, legacy, and, of course, America.
The second half becomes more interested in being a Big and Important film than its leading men, culminating in a disappointing and painfully obvious metaphor that does nothing to resolve the themes so artistically introduced in the first act.
