Very sad (sad!) that I didn’t like this. It’s pointed in its critique without being cutting, and just not particularly funny or charming? Tonally jarring too, uneven, and lacking in any kind of narrative momentum.
Pattinson’s commitment is one of the few saving graces. No other performance moved me.
Highlight: Theo James has a lovely timbre.
Kills need to go further for this to truly fly.
Really responded to this, surprised that it’s generally considered one of Wes’ lesser films.
There are pockets of emotion in The Darjeeling Limited, exemplified in Adrien Brody’s teary-eyed expressions, that I found quite affecting. It’s Anderson’s version of sentiment, definitely there but bottled up, below the surface and the style. Owen Wilson’s micromanaging of his younger brothers is hilarious too, some relatable sibling energy.
Movies that (organically) begin and end on the same shot get a thumbs up from me.
