    The Reader

    ★★★★

Starting the year strong, the Reader, is an impressive film by an impressive filmmaker adapted from a book by the same name. Set in post WWII Germany, the Reader, explores love, justice, morality and (German) guilt in a very confrontational yet compassionate manner. Brilliant performances, storytelling, direction and production design. Kate Winslet nails her region-specific German accent.
This film is worth all the praise and nominations it received.

How do you invite empathy into your heart for people who commit acts of cruelty? How can you forgive?

    Nosferatu

    ★★★

I would have preferred the film delve into some more explorative use of colour, or tone. The doom and gloom feel for the entirety of what was a very long movie could have been relieved by some moments of humour and/or love. But of course, as a gothic film, I was not surprised by it being all that. Overall, Nosferatu was a story of sexual repression in the 19th century, complimented well by excellent performances and impressive direction, cinematography, VFX and SFX. Looking forward to seeing more from Lily Rose-Depp in years to come.

    Hush

    ★★★½

On thé rewatch, I certainly found that there were fewer scares making me jump. Nevertheless, a few factors remain: the film is creepy and scary. The villain is well-constructed and there is enough intrusive to keep him interesting, and audiences, guessing. The main star of Hush, played by Kate Siegel, is brilliant in her performance of a young mute, deaf woman. The development of character and full expression of pain, grief, fear, and drive for survival are all extremely strong…

Performances were great, costuming and set was astonishing. Cinematography was interesting. However, there wasn’t enough feeling to the piece, it felt very surface level. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t feel much.
