ON FALLING. A slow burn sociodrama by first time writer/director Laura Carreira; an impressive debut feature with a standout performance from Portuguese actress Joana Santos. 'On Falling' is a character study that centers around an immigrant worker who works in an Amazon-type fulfillment centre in Scotland and deals with themes of loneliness, depression, dehumanisation and the loss of identity amongst the working class. A movie that is highly reminiscent of Ken Loach, especially his later movies 'I, Daniel Blake' but…

"What's a baby got pockets for?"

I do love me a depressing sociodrama. Mike Leigh reuniting with Marianne Jean-Baptiste for the first time since 'Secrets & Lies' was reason enough to give HARD TRUTHS a shot at cinema, and it was well worth it, with Jean-Baptiste giving one of the performances of the year. Raw. Violent. Emotional and back to basics, more of a grounded Western road movie than your typical superhero blockbuster, the classic Western 'Shane' was obviously an influence, and I loved every minute of it. Dafne Keen was terrific, a scene stealer and a stand out for me. Overall, delighted 'Logan' received an R-rated certificate as we are delivered the Wolverine movie we have deserved and craved for so long...why couldn't all Wolverine stand alones be this X-cellent?! A fitting conclusion to the irreplaceable Hugh Jackman.
