Probably my favourite Kitano film, with Sonatine in close second. Every time I watch it, I find something new. This viewing, the death of Nishi’s child stuck out to me. The soundless vacuum of grief envelopes the protagonist. He wanders by unattended tricycles, a pair of booties at his front door. There’s nothing he has to say about the matter.
