    Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life

    Travelogue documentary in Iran that follows nomads into the wilderness. Amazing footage and adventures. The camera never moves and the frames are full of life and gorgeous composition that use color wash to great effect. Very simple, but clearly creating a documentary language in 1925.

    Mostly concerned with the political and martial aspects of Hugo’s novel, this 6hr jaunt sags in the middle under the weight of the narrative concessions it has made to its Jacobin-Republican foregrounding. The film can’t reconcile the Thernardiers in its plot as well as Hugo intended; Marius and Cosette are practically reduced to rom-com (though they could have admittedly used some lightening from their saccharine storyline in the book). Part Three starts with an amazing sequence as revolution breaks out…
