Mostly concerned with the political and martial aspects of Hugo’s novel, this 6hr jaunt sags in the middle under the weight of the narrative concessions it has made to its Jacobin-Republican foregrounding. The film can’t reconcile the Thernardiers in its plot as well as Hugo intended; Marius and Cosette are practically reduced to rom-com (though they could have admittedly used some lightening from their saccharine storyline in the book).
