I have to hand it to Curtains. It bit off a lot more than it could chew, and did so a fair bit ahead of its time. 1983 feels a bit early to have been so critical of the entertainment industry, while being a part of it at the same time. For that, it deserves some respect, even if it was so very much lacking cohesion and clarity. I was impressed without liking it very much. It definitely stands out as rare and imaginative in the slasher genre.

This wasn’t bad at all. I’ll say this for it: Of all the films of Villenueve’s, this one caught me sleeping the least.

This was fine. Would have preferred if they’d resisted the inclination to modernize an animation style that was already perfect the way it was. I love LOTR stuff, but aside from being a part of that world, this film did very little to justify its excessive run time.

This is a classic revenge film as far as the basic structure of its storyline.  But in every other way, Mandy goes above and beyond all others of its ilk. At first, I questioned its choice to be so boldly stylized, but my preconceived notions of style-over-substance quickly gave way to awe and respect. I’m not even really a fan of slashers or revenge films, but this one is a work of art.
