Chungking Express 1994
Yesterday, I fell off my bike and gave myself a light concussion, just a casual meeting of head and pavement. And here I am, still recovering from that, thinking Chungking Express would be a nice distraction. A bit of romance to soothe the soul. Instead, Wong Kar-wai blindsided me and emotionally knocked me off my metaphorical bike. This movie hit me the same way the pavement did: sudden, jarring, and leaving me dazed, but this time it was the pain…

Berlin: Symphony of a Great City 1927

71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance 1994
Similar to Haneke's other films, this movie is a conceptual masterpiece with a fascinating and ingenious underlying idea. However, an intriguing concept doesn't necessarily translate into an engaging movie. Watching a man hit a ping pong ball for 3 minutes straight or observing an old man speak to his daughter through the phone for 7 minutes, discussing nothing, is simply uninteresting and boring to watch, even if it's intended to be uninteresting and boring. I can appreciate the artistic value and ideas of this film, but, for me, it fails to present those ideas in a compelling way.
