Well, you can't win them all. Bit of a two steps forward, one step back in the Mission Impossible series for me. It's too long by a lot and the structure of chase/expository scene/chase/expository scene/chase gets annoying after a while. A lot of portentous dialogue about "the key" and "The Entity" has you looking at your watch waiting for something to actually happen instead of the characters explaining the plot to each other. On its own terms it's okay, but we'll see if the next film tightens things up successfully.

For most of the movie I was prepared to say "well, it's fine I guess, with some flaws and flabbiness throughout." The last half hour, though, knocked me out of my seat. Really well done thrills, suspense, stunts, et cetera. As usual, don't look too hard at the plot but we're back to high stakes with not one, but two nuclear devices, crazy flight antics, and even low tech fight scenes that are extraordinarily well staged. Still about 20 minutes too long.

After the relative misfire of MI 2, the series gets its footing back with this outing. Cruise's Ethan Hunt is now recognizable from the first film in terms of characterization, Philip Seymour Hoffman is genuinely creepy as the main villain, and the somewhat preposterous story basically holds together if you don't look too closely. What ultimately hurts the film, though, is the last 20 minutes that sort of give up and go straight for the action side of things without staying true to the rest of the plot. Up until then it's a solid reintroduction to the series.

What an unpleasant way to spend a couple of hours. This film doesn't age well at all, both in terms of the action sequences and the fairly misogynistic plot (hey, let's pimp out Thandiwe Newton to her old boyfriend for our own purposes). Plus, Tom Cruise's portrayal of Ethan Hunt is about a thousand miles away from the character in the first film; it's as if he has shown up from a different series entirely. For all the action the whole thing is fairly paint by numbers and riddled with plot holes. Only for people who want to see the whole series.
