Lifeguard 1976
This movie is not very good, but it serves an important purpose as a time capsule from an era when you could make a movie about a 33-year-old lifeguard in the midst of an exceedingly mellow life crisis, include a subplot about statutory rape that leads to a suicide attempt, and no one would really even raise an eyebrow. Whatever soul it has is due solely to the charismatic Sam Elliott, who lobbied hard to play the title character for reasons that will never make sense to me.

The Mean Season 1985
Most of this actually hangs together pretty well as a combo platter serial killer mystery-slash-drama about the responsibility of the press, but it sails amazingly off the rails in its last ten minutes, reducing everything that came before it to day-old oatmeal.

The Silent Partner 1978
A talented cast and intriguing premise are undone by undisciplined direction and a sour misogynistic streak.

The Package 1989
They don't make 'em like this anymore. And yeah, there are some pretty good reasons for that, but still — watching Gene Hackman kick ass will never not be fun.
