I really enjoyed Hustle and Flow, and thought Terrence Howard deserved that Oscar nom, but the creepy pimp-prostitute dynamic, and the lack of reckoning on that front, was a bit jarring.

Part sports movie, part romance, Challengers is the perfect blend of action and drama.  It took me a moment to get into the structure, but once I did it really added to the tension.  The tennis part is filmed in a really visceral way and I came away thinking those three actors must actually be good tennis players.  I liked all the characters, but especially Tashi, who is prickly, ultra-competitive, and atypical as the female romantic lead.

This movie was a fun, moving, pastel-coloured antidote for the blah feeling I’ve had since watching Joker.  The Barbie world depicted is the definition of attention to detail, and I loved the fusion of real plasticky elements and painted theatrical-style backdrops.  Great characters and great character development - who knew there would be such a huge Ken arc?  So many funny moments, and moments where you might say, “yeah, that’s what it was like playing with Barbies” and “yeah, that’s…

Babylon pulls back the curtain on old-time movie making and I loved it.  There are some truly mind-boggling scenes, with so many moving pieces you wonder how many days or maybe even weeks were needed to film them.  There are also moments of great tension, and, as promised, excess and depravity.  I tend to think of people living in that era as being fairly conservative, but whoa, apparently not.  The runtime is longggg, but the lavishness of it all, combined with getting to learn technical things about early cinema, kept me interested.  The music — my goodness.  And the trippy ending — pretty cool.
