  i haven’t read queer, but i’m familiar with burroughs’ junkie, which i read in conjunction with a reread of allen ginsberg’s howl. compared to the work of his contemporaries, who often frame addiction as a channel to ecstatic madness and the transcendence of modernity, burroughs’ novel (which, like queer, is led by william lee) can be read as a study of one man’s giving in to the horrors of the modern world — portraying drug abuse as a grueling surrender…
