    Is it well shot? Absolutely. Was it entertaining? Absolutely. Is the sex work representation in the room with us? Fucking no. We knew absolutely nothing about Anora except her line of work. Molding Anora’s character beyond strip teases and sex scenes is what makes her relatable—and humanizes her. Sex workers have lives and interests and hopes and dreams and complex narratives that make them no different than anyone else trying to make a living. This film reeks of the insufferable self proclaimed male feminist gaze. It’s 2025 and at this point one would hope that representation for sex work can go beyond “sex work is work.”

    This isn’t a historical bio pic, it is a political commentary. Affective art demands you sit in your discomfort and that’s exactly what this film did. You never once see what’s happening within the walls of Auschwitz, but you can hear it in the distance—just out of reach,  while the Höss family go about their mundane lives in their comfortable home; the discomfort is inescapable.
