The Battle of Algiers (1966) is an Italian-Algerian drama by Gillo Pontecorvo centered around the Algerian struggle for independence in the 1950s. It is a widely influential political film (i.e. being shown in the Pentagon, as we learned from our reading) and is shot in a pseudo-documentary/newsreel style. Black Girl (1966) by Ousmane Sembène is centered around the experience of a young Black woman who moves from Senegal to France, working for a wealthy French couple. On the surface, the film may seem like a simplistic tale from the point of view of a Senegalese woman, however, the film specifically centers around the themes and effects of colonialism and racism.
