What this film does great, is showing the horrors of the action of war. The action sequences are great, ugly and gritty, and does a wonderful job of showing the unforgiving nature of war.
What it lacks, is what in the novel stood out to me the most, and what I feel could have made this into an all-time classic, it's the horror of peace after you've experienced the war.
