Shell 2024
Not campy or clever enough to be fun. Not serious enough to be scary or icky. Instead, Shell falls prey to the derivative 80s horror clichés it's supposedly paying homage to. But those movies weren't afraid to reveal their cheeseball monsters in the final act. This one lacks creature feature conviction.

Heretic 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
It's a solid and budget savvy thriller that effectively turns the screws in its first act but fizzles out by the third. Hugh Grant is an engaging, casually creepy villain and delivers some clever diatribes about religion. Unfortunately, there's the awkward irony that while Heretic seems to confront the hypocrisies of faith it goes on to embrace the hoariest of puritanical endings (the religious good girl survives, the mouthy girl who--gasp--has had sex, dies).
