About embracing feminine rage through falling in love with the monster under the bed. Yet it’s a metaphor for regaining agency and self love after a break up and cancer diagnosis. Melissa Barrera is wonderful and the movie is cute. More romantic comedy than horror, I wish the ending was more subversive or caught me off guard more.

“This piano is out of tune”, and so is this movie.

Hugh Grant is terrifying even when he breaks into his Jar Jar Binks impression. Psychological and suspenseful, this tackles the complexity of in religion, manipulation, and control in a game of cat and mouse of who can outsmart the other. Great cast, and acting. All modern religions are iterations, er… copies of the one true religion just as Lana Del Rey’s “Get Free” and its predecessor Radiohead’s “creep” are to The Hollies’ “The Air That I Breathe”. Basically nothing is original.

John Malkovich as a legendary pop/rock star turn cult leader entertains in this cult horror commentary on celebrity culture (but you could include even politics/media) and but doesn’t really hit the stride it could have. It’s hard not to compare to other movies like Midsommar, Suspiria, and Blink Twice, etc. while watching it and the build up of tension doesn’t quite pay off at the finish.
