Arrival 2016

Despite knowing the journey... and where it leads... I embrace it... and I welcome every moment of it.
Incredible visuals, incredible acting, a truly astounding story told. One of the best of the decade for sure. Just... astounding.
An incredible meditation on the potential incomprehensibility of alien life, and the core traits of human life: the unconditionality of love, how human communication relies on linear time and language, all existing next to our propensity for violence and isolation in spite of our common good.
Honestly, this movie is astounding.

If Anne Hathaway treated me as well as Miranda Priestly treats Andy, I’d say thank you.

The Substance 2024
I have to respect the craft at making this kind of movie. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley both were great. And God, it was disgusting, so props to the visual effects team and the foley team. And to Fargeat for directing it. I have a lot of respect for this entry of the horror genre, especially as a feminist tour de force.
That all said, watching this confirmed that this genre is REALLY not my thing. I'm going to go back to watching a few horror movies every October for spooky season and call it good.
Yep. Now I'm going to do some serious palette cleansing.

A Complete Unknown 2024
At least it’s not a formulaic music biopic, but that doesn’t make it an interesting movie. I did kinda like being a fly on the wall to the staged version of Bob Dylan’s life though, and Timmy C killed it! Actually, everyone acted really really well, it’s gotta be said.
Anyway, I’ve gotta go listen to every Bob Dylan album in chronological order.

Vertigo 1958
An excellently told thriller. The camera work is phenomenal.
My issue with watching older movies, particularly with Hitchcock, is trying to escape the feeling that I have seen this all before. Because I have, in many iterations. Everyone after Hitchcock copied and built off of what he does, so I have seen most of these tropes and maneuvers in more recent movies.
Also, with older movies it is quite hard for me to escape the sexism or plainly wealthy, white…

Dune: Part Two 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Villanueve knows what he’s doing with a camera. Every big cinematic moment is framed excellently. He knows when a wide shot works and when the close up seals the deal. He knows when slow motion builds the excitement and when it doesn’t. And he’s learned a bit when to pull back on the music, my main complaint about BR2049. The hits in the fight are heavier when the score quiets down.
Crucially, he knew how to get the performances he needed…
