holliday's performance was beautiful but it's impossible to watch this interview, and most other interviews of black and or gay men of the era, without confronting that the film was made to observe what people consider/ed abnormal behavior. these are made with curiosity and fascination, intertwined with contempt and disgust and fear, in what "faggots" or "niggers" have to say about the lives they live. the intention is showing the horror of failing to correctly practice [white] masculinity

Mikey and Nicky 1976
this is the best film ever made, it is so unsympathetic and violent. with elaine may's writing & directing mixed with the coloring of the shots it is unsympathetically dark and cold and despairable there is misery embedded in every line and every action/motive in this film no matter how happy these guys try to be. you'd have to love someone so much to hate them this way. "and i'd do anything for you, anything"
