One of Oscar Micheaux's better sound pictures. It made me wonder if it was because there was already source material (T.S. Stribling's novel of the same name).
Each person had a chance to shine in performances that epitomized the dichotomy of being Black and educated in White institutions. An apt 1930s depiction of what W.E.B Dubois would call the double consciousness of Black Americans or how James Baldwin would describe the idea of being Black and educated in America as Schizophrenic.
Unfortunately, this depiction is not that far from present today.
