Apparently this movie has aged better than it debuted. Critics were harsh about the violence, style, and story, and while it does present as very early 2000s in those ways, the style is at least more interesting than most action movies, and there is character for days through the performances of Denzel and Dakota. She has to be one of the greatest child actors ever. The colorizing may look weird and derivative of the time for most of the movie, but it pays off in the final scene when the space opens up and the colors just pop. Maybe low brow art, but it's still art.

Memoir of a Snail 2024
Quirky and dark, but the sentimentality gets old, especially once the subjects outgrow the cutesy perspective of childhood. This also makes the film lose steam about halfway to 2/3rds through when story threads are thrown at the wall and whatever sticks gets tied up super quickly without earning the associated emotion.
Super solid claymation, and as in Mary and Max the music is the most important character.

Past Lives 2023
The bitterest and the sweetest. I've had so many things going through my head since watching this yesterday but I don't know if any of them are worth writing. This film is so great about saying with words what needs to be said and evoking what needs to be felt that anything detailed I could write would seem redundant or needlessly expository.
Through the beautiful long takes we are immersed into the scenes, and the dialogue balances perfectly the cadences…
