With every rise comes the fall. Paul Thomas Anderson’s prowess as a director and writer are immediately made known to the movie world. This is when a star was born. Boogie Nights is a perfect encapsulation of found family. The primary three of Dirk, Jack, and Amber all deal with their own sins. Three incredibly flawed people that come together, break apart, and find their ways back home.

The first two chapters had the semblances of a quality character arc and messaging re- the U.S. war machine and the poor state of post-war fallout for individuals. Then the Russo brothers brought the story to its low points. Upon 15ish minutes of Cherry’s return home, the movie runs dry of things to say and show. It’s just random scenes happening in loop for quite awhile, and a long while at that. I feel it loses all sense of direction and purpose and becomes a boring slog that brings no new insights to veterans or addictions. This soundtrack deserves better.

Wayyy more mystery than I was expecting and I loved that. Black Bag is set up, slight-of-hand, and manipulation. I do wish the lead balance was more 50-50 than advertised. Felt way more 70-30 in Michael Fassbender’s favor. Overall though this is an engaging and intriguing movie with a bunch of freak people.

Since February of 2020, Killers of the Flower Moon has been my most anticipated upcoming movie. Sure, that gives me extra incentive to want to love it, but I also had the highest of expectations possible. Three Oscar winners on the cast, the greatest director of all time, and such a sensitive, ruthless, important story to be told are high standards. They combined to make the second best Martin Scorsese movie ever.

Not a single element of Killers of…
