This is the first Ozu film I’ve watched, so the first 20 min I thought it was going to be boring and drawn out but the pacing and the story grows on you, every shot is interesting, and you really get into it. The characters increasingly show more and more depth throughout the movie, like the grandpa getting shitfaced and revealing more of what he really thinks about his kids, or the grandma at Norikos house, and the kids showing love to their parents but you can tell there’s some distance between them. Class movie overall, gotta be a 5 star.
This movie is often overlooked, however, it is the godfather of Japanese and just overall cinema. The influence it has had throughout generations cannot be understated. Although it is long, the story of a ronin growing and working with others to protect a village is shot beautifully, and the acting is phenomenal for the time period. really an ageless time-piece that can still be enjoyed today.
