I can't help but think that this feels so much like a rough draft for what Lynch would create later in his career. It's a stereotypical early-career film where the creator is mainly concerned with putting forward their ideas while entertainment takes a back seat. The difference in terms of entertainment between this and every film he made after (excluding The Elephant Man) is night and day. It's not totally boring, it's really weird and funny at times, it just feels a bit like a long short film.
