Another solid dark comedy out of A24, shocking I know. Filled with long static shots, "Showing Up" playes with its name sake, balancing attentive attendance and uncomfortable lingering. Cinematographically, this film feels immensely focused on the intersection of the visual and the narrative committed to the maxim of showing and not telling.
The cast is comprised of wonderfully developed unlikables, shaped largely by the negative space of omission and the unsaid. There is something off about everything and everyone. And…
This film has been characterized as melodramatic, however I found that to be a grossly shallow, bordering on jaded, classification of a wonderful piece of film making. This film is an outstandingly authentic depiction of the silent (and not so silent) projection of cisheteronormativity into the interpersonal and the subsequent devastation of the beautiful. It serves as a loving but painfully honest voyeur on how survival and avoidance can come at immense expense to the people closest to us.
