If I wanted a lengthy reminder that I’ll miss my parents when they’re gone, I’d call my mom.
I understand people love this, and understanding brevity is not a synonym for greatness, I think you could easily illustrate the themes of the film just with the final 15-20 minutes, which were the parts I enjoyed the most.
If I didn’t know this was a celebrated cultural touchstone, I’d think it was fine. The pacing a little slow for my taste, but interesting enough I’d give Ozu another go. But I do not get the hype.
