I never felt genuinely afraid during this movie- but then I rarely do. But this movie was tense, disconcerting, and entertaining at the same time. I happened to see Maxxxine first, and I didn't like it- but this one did a far better job at accomplishing its goals. This is, at its core, a competent version of a slasher movie, with perhaps a little something extra under the hood about striving for a better life.

Y Tu Mamá También 2001
I really don't like voiceovers in films. They tell us things we shouldn't have to be told- that we should see. I was ready to ding this movie for using them so extensively. But, in reality, it didn't detract from the film.
No matter what genre it is, I watch movies to feel things. And boy did this movie make me feel things. So many things. An amazing film. See it.

Godzilla 1954
Godzilla can be enjoyed on multiple levels. As an important piece of film history, you can see how it created the genre of kaiju movies. As a monster movie, it is scary and tense and deserving of its praise. From a historical point of view, you can see how deeply it is connected to the Japanese experience of the end of World War 2 and the development of nuclear weapons.
I'm glad I finally got around to seeing it.

Ghostbusters 1984
This movie fits into the category "I guess I had to be there." I know its very well-regarded and loved, but as I watched it, I really don't get what makes it so special. I wanted to like and expected to like it, as I grew up with the cartoon and had a good bit of nostalgia. It was too serious to be campy and too campy to be serious. Mostly I vacillated between "meh" and "bored." I also wish Ernie Hudson was in it more.
