This film is mosaic of many things; a courtroom drama, a World War II picture, and a story of «forbidden» love. Coming out in 99’ a year after big directors made Saving private Ryan (98’) and Thin Red Line (98’) - its interesting to see the aftermath of the war rather than another shoot en up military film. This film centers around the prejudice and rasicm towards asian-americans, and thoses who are stuck in the past vs those who look…

Seeing this you can feel the darkness (and cold) as you look into a story that shows us ordinary small town folks who are put to the test when a lot of dirty money lands at their feet. Being in their 30s/40s the cast perspectives on life and dreams became more relateble than at frist imagined. A feeling of great uneasyness through out the film pushed upon us be a lot of ravens and Sam Raimi. One of Billy Bobs best roles.

Coppola was in his 50s when he made this movie, but after rewatching it looks like a hungry art-student gone haywire with brushes and paint making a impressionistic version of an old tale. With so much attention to detail, vitality and passion for film-making you can clearly see an artist or I would say artists at work! When you see it you can feel every frame of this gothic horror-love story in an early 90s wrapping.

Finchers sensitivity of showing work-to-be-done with both great macro detail and wide scope suits him well. However, after the 20 first minutes everything becomes a montage - with Fassbenders voice over and the smiths "greatest hits" playing on and off every scene. This film shares the same title name as John Woos The Killer which he made in the late 80s - That film has more edge, heart and even more at stake than Finchers (I would say laid back) hitman thriller. Despite the killer cool british soundtrack, this film becomes forgettable when looking at Finchers filmography as a whole.
