The Holdovers 2023
Billing this movie as a simply a comedy doesn't do it it the justice it deserves. The acting and writing were great and kept you on your toes, ranging from the genuinely funny to the dishearteningly sad. The way it was filmed was the ultimate hero for me, grainy 4:3 with old school fade-outs really made you feel like you're watching a 50 year old movie. All of that on top of a great story about unlikely friends gave this the feeling of a modern classic before it was over. Firmly in my annual winter rotation, Giamatti is a gem but we knew that.
