The middle is tragic, end is excellent. Done as if a documentary. Restored to gorgeous b&w. Fosse references it in All That Jazz. Great score.

Not about Mississippi, it's the name of a boat from France and one of its colonies that brings the leading woman. I love the long takes.

    I, Tonya: Psychology of Abuse

    ★★★½

Short interview with psychologist about "I, Tonya". Abused children see it as love because they assume the abuser loves them and they don't have any other model of it. So they don't leave, don't see themselves as victims, and resist help. They're not irrational.

Leave it to Polanski to make the best of modern noirs. Made after Vietnam, and after Manson killings that took one of Polanski’s lovers, which partly explains why he had to write the ending himself, called “the tunnel at the end of the light” by the screenwriter. Has nothing to do with Chinatown really, except to invoke the inscrutable stereotype. Nicholson does his own stunts. I wonder if that includes the nose scene. The score was redone just before shipping the print, with a new composer, finishing in 11 days. Good sound. Was it really intended to be such low saturation, but not black and white?
